The North West Province of South Africa is bounded on the north by Botswana,
on the south by the provinces of Free State and the Northern Cape, and on the
northeast and east by the Limpopo Province and Gauteng.
The North West Province consists out of the 4 following districts:
Bophirima District Municipality
Bojanala Platinum District Municipality
Central District Municipality
Southern District Municipality
Much of the province consists of flat areas of scattered trees and grassland.
The Magaliesberg mountain range in the northeast extends about 130 km (about
80 miles) from Pretoria to Rustenburg.
The Vaal River flows along the southern border of the province.
Mafikeng,
formerly Mafeking, serves as the provincial capital. Other significant
towns includeBrits,
Klerksdorp,
Lichtenburg,
Potchefstroom,
Rustenburg
and Sun City. The province has two universities: the University of North
West, which was formerly called the University of Bophuthatswana (founded in
1979), in Mmabatho; and Potchefstroom University for Christian Higher Education.
The mainstay of the economy of North West Province is mining, which
generates more than half of the province's gross domestic product and provides
jobs for a quarter of its workforce. The chief minerals are gold, mined at Orkney
and Klerksdorp;
uranium, mined at Klerksdorp; platinum, mined at Rustenburg and Brits;
and diamonds, mined at Lichtenburg, Christiana,
and Bloemhof. The northern and western parts of the province have many sheep
farms and cattle and game ranches. The eastern and southern parts are crop-growing
regions that produce maize (corn), sunflowers, tobacco, cotton, and citrus fruits.
The entertainment and casino complex at Sun City and Lost City also contributes
to the provincial economy.
Hartbeespoort
is a small resort town in the North West Province of South Africa, situated
on slopes of the Magaliesberg mountain and the banks of the Hartbeespoort
Dam. The town consists mainly of holiday homes around the dam as
it is popular with visitors from nearby Gauteng Province.
Location is one of the North West Provinces greatest natural advantages.
Mafikeng, the provincial capital, is a staging post for rail and road
traffic into the sub-continent.
The main Cape Town to Zimbabwe railway line passes through Mafikeng
via Botswana, with a feeder line to Angola. In terms of roads, the vital east-west
corridor linking Maputo on the Eastern African seaboard and Walvis Bay on the
Western African seaboard, runs through the North West Province.
The Provinces positioning will be further augmented by the planned Trans-Kalahari
corridor through Botswana and Namibia, truly justifying its claim as South
Africas gateway into Africa.
Using this natural position, the perspective investor can attain cost effective
proximity to ideal trading environments throughout the entire Southern African
Development Community (SADC), which offers a market of more than 150 million
people.
Alternatively, investors could take advantage of the dynamic business prospects
available in the North West Province through its vast mineral resources,
established manufacturing base, appealing tourist industry and agricultural
abundance.
A naturally beautiful area, the North West Province encapsulates the
full scale of human development in one Province one can retrace the footsteps
of the earliest inhabitants on earth and follow that development right through
to sophisticated technology based manufacturing.
The North West Province accounts for roughly 10% of South Africas
land mass and from the very dawn of time, this area has been a magnet for many
different cultures. Today, its rich cultural diversity is reflected in its population
of 3,5 million people, 8,9% of South Africas entire population.
There are many opportunities for increasing the income-producing capacities
of the local industries, enhancing product beneficiation within the Province
and participating more fully in the myriad of international markets linked to
the regions natural resources.
