Yzerfontein is a small harbour town with about 1500 inhabitants on the West Coast of South Africa about 90 km north of Cape Town. The name in means "Iron Fountain".
Yzerfontein is known for its Sixteen Mile Beach, the longest uninterrupted sandy beach on the South African coastline, stretching north from the main beach of the town, to the West Coast National Park, which borders the town. Dassen Island, another nature reserve, is about 10 km offshore.
Yzerfontein is ideal for whale-spotting. Southern Right, Humpback whales and dolphins are regularly seen.
South Africa's West Coast is washed by the Benguela current which originates in the Antarctic, and thus the sea water is very chilly.
If you're tiring of Yzerfontein during your visit, then go explore nearby Darling, Khwa Ttu San cultural centre, Thali Thali, Buffelsfontein and Grotto Bay Nature Reserve. Keep your eyes peeled for eland, bontebok, kudu, gemsbok, Cape mountain zebra, caracal and the African wild cat.
They also offer a range of 4X4 trails, hiking trails, game and nature trails and drives on foot and by vehicle, and excellent birdwatching. Hiking trails such as the Darling Stagger, Elandsfontein Private Reserve, Grotto Bay Coastal Nature Reserve, and Tienie Versveld Reserve are popular. You can also explore the Bokbaaivygie flower trail with its explosion of colour in springtime, and the Schaapeiland Trail along the coast.
