Paarl is situated along the Berg River about 60 kilometres from Cape Town and is the third oldest town in South Africa having been founded in 1687. It is also the largest town in the winelands and forms a cultural, historical, farming, educational and commercial hub. Paarl derives its name from the world Parel or Pearl in Dutch, a name given to it by a Dutch Fiscal in 1657 when he saw the giant granite rocks glistening in the sun after a rainstorm and named it 'de Diamant en de Peerlbarg'. Paarl Mountain topped by a cluster of three granite domes (named Paarl, Britannia and Gordon’s rocks), an arboretum and the Taal monument is over 650 metres high and offers sweeping views across the Pearl Valley and the town below. It is a town which has many beautiful and historic buildings and farms. Fine examples of Cape Dutch, Victorian, Edwardian and Art Deco architecture line its 11 kilometre long Main Street (the longest in South Africa). These buildings include the KWV headquarters, Laborie, the Strooidak and Tweetoring churches, Zeederburg Square and museums such as the Paarl, Taal and the Wagon Museums. Famous schools and their buildings include Paarl Boys', Paarl Gimnasium, and La Rochelle Girls' High Schools. It is not difficult to see why family buyers are drawn to Boland towns , or why Paarl is being transformed into a bustling trendy spot full of beautifully renovated buildings, coffee shops and restaurants.
Paarl is famous for its top schools such as Paarl Gymnasium, Paarl Boys High, Paarl Girls High and La Rochelle Girls high just to mention a few. These schools have all presented national sportsmen and women and are also the foundation of the Paarl community.
