Welcome to Boksburg, another town in the Gauteng Province of South Africa that owes its origins to the discovery of gold in the Witwatersrand. After gold was discovered in the area in 1887 and the gold mining began, the area was named Boksburg after the State Secretary of the South African Republic, W. Eduard Bok.
Coal was later discovered in the area, but in 1895 due to ferocious underground fires that broke out, rendering the entire mining area unsafe, the coal mining was discontinued. But it's all thanks to the coal mining in the area that a railway line was built between Johannesburg Park Station and Boksburg station, later being extended to Brakpan and Springs, where larger deposits of coal later unearthed.
As the mining industry was steadily booming in the area and more gold being discovered further down, about 8km southward of Boksburg, the first Government offices were built but instead of being called Boksburg, the new area was called Elsburg. But soon after that, President Paul Kruger ordered that a new town must be developed to accommodate the miners.
