According to historians, Hermanus or Hermanuspietersfontein, as the village was known for almost half a century, was established in 1815 by a 37 year old Hermanus Pieters after setting camp next to a fresh spring he discovered while wandering along the elephants' path, Southward of Caledon. As soon as the word got out that Hermanus Pieters had found the greener pastures, families started making vacations to the area. Churches and schools were built and before long, a village was established.

In 1904 when Hermanus received an official municipality status, there were debates amongst locals as to what to name this town. Names such as Hennsville or Patersonia and even Warringtondorp were suggested but ultimately the name Hermanus prevailed.
Today Hermanus, although still as tranquil as it was during its inception days, is still one of South Africa's most popular tourists destination. It is calle the Sleepy town along the sea as its residents fought strongly for their hometown to remain a sleepy, quaint seaside village rather than succumb to the modernization that was creeping up all around them.
With tourists’ attraction sites such as Fernkloof Nature Reserve and Golf Estates like Fernkloof Estate, Hermanus has certainly grown to become one of South Africa's outstanding towns with a lot to offer, Tourism and Real Estate wise.
