Welcome to Hermanus, an official Whale Watching Capital of the World. Other than being a lively hub of all year activities in the Western Cape Province, this South African coastal city is the best land based whale watching in the world. It has been reported that about 60 to 100 Southern Right Whales visit Walker Bay, Hermanus' shores from July until December every year. Hermanus is also known for its bubbly residents, their welcoming hospitality makes a visit to Hermanus even more memorable for tourists.

According to historians, Hermanus or Hermanuspietersfontein, as the village was known for almost half a century, was established in 1815 by a 37 year old Hermanus Pieters after setting camp next to a fresh spring he discovered while wandering along the elephants' path, Southward of Caledon. As soon as the word got out that Hermanus Pieters had found the greener pastures, families started making vacations to the area. Churches and schools were built and before long, a village was established.

In 1904 when Hermanus received an official municipality status, there were debates amongst locals as to what to name this Hermanus. Names such as Hennsville or Patersonia and even Warringtondorp were suggested but ultimately the name Hermanus prevailed.

Today Hermanus, although still as tranquil as it was during its inception days, is still one of South Africa's most popular tourists destination. It is called the Sleepy Hermanus along the sea as its residents fought strongly for Hermanus to remain a sleepy, quaint seaside village rather than succumb to the modernization that was creeping up all around them.

Hermanus is also the commercial hub of the Whale Coast.
