Welcome to Witbank, South Africa's leading coal mining district in the province of Mpumalanga. This heavy industrial town was founded around 1890 and because of the sandstone that is commonly found in area where travellers and wagon drivers used to sit on for some rest during their journey, the town was named Witbank, a combination of two Afrikaans words meaning white ridge.
Soon after its origin, signs of Black Gold - coal - were discovered in the area. This discovery resulted in a coal rush, with mines popping up all over the terrain. Then in 1903, as the population increased, Witbank was proclaimed a town. In 1926, Eskom built Doornpoort, a dam that became the first power station in the area. With an abundance of power and water supply in Witbank, companies began migrating to the town and in their pursuit, an exodus of jobseekers, resulting in an unavoidable population growth of about 9,500.
In 2001, a population count of Witbank as per GeoNames’ database’ figures was standing at 60 000 and in 2006, this figure jumped to a staggering 262 491, making Witbank one of the fast growing industrial towns in South Africa.
