Welcome to Roodepoort, a South African town that was founded in 1884 when Fred Struben discovered the first payable gold in the area. Like many other South African towns in the 1800s, this mining town started off as a farm and it was named Roodepoort, an Afrikaans word that means Red Valley because of the red soil that is still found in the area.
Between 1886 and 1888 as more gold was being discovered in the farm, the farm was slowly getting populous and as a result, Roodepoort, Florida, Hamberg and Maraisburg, four main mining towns in the area were proclaimed.
Although still a mining town, today Roodepoort is a sprawling residential and commercial area with a selection of shopping malls, recreational parks, lakes, a buzzing CBD, easily accessible transportation routes and upmarket suburbs in the West Rand district of Gauteng.
Roodepoort has 116 active suburbs.

Today, together with Randburg and Sandton, Roodepoort forms a part of the Greater Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality. The move was made during the transitional period of 1996-2000 when independent neighbouring municipalities in Gauteng were amalgamated.
