Much has been written about the potential positive impact on the South African property market of the Football World Cup in 2010, but a closer look at the lessons of the Olympics in Athens means a lot of work needs to be done — especially in marketing South Africa - IAfrica.com.

In his part III of Property Investments, Dave tackles valuing investments properties. Two roads take you from the N2 into the Strand: the R44 takes you past the sprawling Somerset Mall and a multitude of new office and semi-industrial parks; the other is Main Road which takes you down a path reminiscent of Voortrekker Road in Goodwood with its second-hand furniture shops and used car lots. If you’ve never been to the Strand, neither road prepares you for what you’ll find when you reach the seaside. Zim zala bim! Unfortunately, there is no magic way to turn a green or black pool clear overnight ! It usually takes a lot of time, effort and money to clear up a typical "swampy" green pool. It is certainly best if you never let your pool water get this dirty, however most pool owners experience a "green pool problem" from time to time. Read more in Have Fun

Much has been written about the potential positive impact on the South African property market of the Football World Cup in 2010, but a closer look at the lessons of the Olympics in Athens means a lot of work needs to be done — especially in marketing South Africa.

Barak Geffen, Executive Director of Sotheby’s International Realty in South Africa, (operated by Lew Geffen) says, "There is a lot to be learned from the Greek Olympic experience on how best to sell South Africa as a desirable country and etch ourselves into the minds of tourists and investors for a long time to come."...

I've looked at your home and investment properties over the last two weeks and this week I'd like to tackle valuing investment properties. There are many different ways of trying to determine the value of a property; price, sales income, cost of ownership, future capital growth, rental income. With these various methods of valuation are a myriad of ratio's that can be used; yield, price to earning ratio, Internal Rate of Return (IRR), cap rate, capital growth rate. Today I'm going to look at some of these...

>> Housing sector to build more houses, create jobs

HOUSING Minister Lindiwe Sisulu has rallied the housing development sector behind a concerted drive to address the housing backlog.

Sisulu said recently at a housing indaba held in Cape Town, where 46 stakeholders signed a social contract, that she hoped accelerated housing delivery would wipe out the backlog, which she said stood at 2,4million, by 2014...

>> Sewerage crisis looms over central Cape Town

Booming development in the central city is set to cause the stressed sewerage infrastructure to collapse if plans to deal with the impending crisis aren't implemented.

The central city is expected to have about 2 000 new housing units by the end of next year, and the N2 Gateway Project will deliver about 4 000 units in District Six. Another major housing development is planned for Culemborg...

MELROSE Arch and Warner Projects have unveiled the next phase of the Melrose Arch residential component following the runaway success of the first apartments, which fetched prices up to R7,5m.

The move reflects the confidence the market has in the Melrose Arch development and expansion, and was driven by increasing demand for residential space in the area.

It is the first newly planned development within a precinct that will include a fully accessible retail component to complement the urban lifestyle attraction...

There are only three things that will clear up a green pool:
Your filter system, your pool chemicals and you !

Whaling season in full swing

The first Southern Right Whales visited us early this year. After reports that there were two Southern Right Whales in the Bay researchers managed to get identifiable photographs of both individuals, which only stayed in the bay for one morning. For reasons unknown to us these two whales obviously hadn't made the return journey to the Antarctic for the summer months.

Since the first week in June there have been sporadic sightings and in August we knew that the whales have come at last. Although most of the sightings have been made in the Keurbooms area, we had a few visitors that gave us a good show from Robberg Beach , Central Beach and Look Out beach.

Sightings of whales in the Knysna Lagoon made headlines in our local newspapers. It's not uncommon for the Whales to go through The Heads, but never have they gone as far up in the lagoon as the Oyster beds. They usually just go as far as the Knysna Yacht Club. Just to show you that no matter how big you are your can still be a little nosey!
