Edition 16 of 2004, Friday 30 April 2004

Dear Reader,

Miracles never seem to amaze us!

Exactly ten years ago in April, South Africa abolished its history of apartheid, and opted for a future of equality and non-racism. Enough reason to throw a birthday party for the country on the most southern tip of Africa, and to highlight the special role culture played!

In 10 years, the country has achieved many successes, including greater political stability and greater economic freedom. All of the major political parties continue their commitment to democracy, and there has been modest economic growth. More South Africans now receive education and have access to electricity and clean water.

But where has this taken us in the property market that is “GOING GLOBAL”?

The UK’s property market is leading the way among developed nations experiencing what has been described as “the first global property boom of the 21st Century”, with inner-city property prices on the up around the world. New York, Cape Town and Paris are three of the cities singled out by the author of a report published in The Daily Telegraph this week showing the “obsession” with rising house prices demonstrated by citizens of many of the world’s leading economies.

And that is where we put our focus this week - on our overseas subscribers. We look at the strong South African property returns, the risks for the South Africa economy, and the low prices for houses in South Africa.

South African legal experts Sonnenberg McLoughlin brings us up to speed with the new immigration requirements in "Have Fun".

South Africans are justifiably proud of their wonderful country and want their visitors to have an unforgettable time and return again and again. What better place to return to than Port St. Francis and neighbouring St. Francis Bay in the Eastern Cape.

For sure an edition packed with information!

CyberProp greetings!

>> Risks remain for South Africa's economy

When apartheid ended in 1994, there were fears that South Africa's then Marxist-influenced ANC would take the country on a path of nationalisation and centralisation.

The country would soon sink into the economic abyss of many other African nations, the pessimists feared.

But this did not happen...

In 1999, the average house price in SA was R218 000. Five years later, it is close to R500 000 and rising at 22,3%/year, according to the Absa house price index for March.

Callers to talk radio stations complain that first-time buyers are being knocked out of the market. Conspiracy theories are growing about greedy capitalists manipulating the market and foreigners pushing prices out of the reach of locals...
