Dear Reader

Some great news to kick off the weekend. On Wednesday the price of fuel will decrease by much more than predicted, the energy dept said. The price of 93 octane petrol would decrease by 89 cents and a litre of 95 octane petrol would cost 85 cents less.

Something else to look forward to is that a cut in interest rates may be on the cards and will boost the South African home buying market, according to Bill Rawson.

Headlines: SA listed property is outperforming most asset classes globally. In SA, for the first five months of 2012, listed property achieved returns of 11.1%, compared with shares at 5.1% and bonds at 4.2%. This according to Estienne de Klerk, Executive Director of Growthpoint Properties Limited, the largest South African JSE-listed property company. One of the reason for this is the lower interest rate environment.

Market news: Student accommodation is tipped by a further financial planner. "There is large demand for halls of residence and purpose-built flats... and income yields are around 8 per cent, relatively low risk, and with the prospect of capital growth." That being said, a prominent estate agency predicts total returns in the student accommodation market will be 11.5 per cent in the current academic year, down from a staggering 13.5 per cent in the previous 12 months. Cut in interest rates definitely on the cards - and will boost housing market

With the cost price index (and inflation in general) likely to continue to stay below the 6% upper limit (it is already at 5.7%) and with South Africa's economy now feeling the effects of significant reductions in exports to Europe, the South African Reserve Bank's Monetary Policy Committee will 'almost inevitably' find itself able to reduce its interest rates so as to stimulate economic growth, says Bill Rawson, Chairman of the Rawson Property Group...
