Property Search | Estate Agents | List your property

Edition 12 of 2006, Friday, 24 March 2006

Dear Reader,

One thing on every property owners' mind when it comes to the Soccer World Cup in 2010 - is how will this influence my property's value... in other words - what's in it for my back pocket? Well that remains to be seen... we do however know that the coach for the SA team will be pocketing a cool R40 Million yearly! How's that!?

This week we continue to look at the issue of land purchases by foreigners. We look at buying a "bargain property". We look at Knysna and specifically why it's such a diverse tourist destination. Come join us, where we're having fun in the middle of nowhere, and read more about Eskom's nuclear ambitions.

Enjoy!

Interdict could indirectly both help and further prejudice private property owners

A Johannesburg high court judgment refusing the municipality an eviction order against squatters has upped the stakes for private investors in inner cities.

The judgment raises the risk of landlords being unable to eject invaders.

>> In defence of whose interests?

I RECENTLY explained, on these pages, why the recommendation of a moratorium on land purchases by foreigners is completely unjustified by the available evidence.

One of the arguments used to justify the recommendation was that foreigners were pushing up property prices. The latest Absa house price index (February) shows that overall house prices are still increasing but the rate of increase is slowing...

>> Property boom ‘will speed transformation’

The current strong demand for property should help property companies to implement the five-year property sector charter transformation targets.

First National Bank property strategist John Loos said yesterday that with strong demand for property and construction driving pricing power through much of the industry, it was now far more attractive to outsiders looking to get into the sector, either as owners, employers or employees...

>> Have Fun – Cape mountain escape

I must admit that the farm Simonskloof’s main attraction for me was the promise of no electricity and no cellphone reception. As an increasingly hectic week drew to a close, I found myself wanting to escape into the peace you only find from being in the middle of nowhere.

And let’s face it, Simonskloof is pretty much as close as you can get to the middle of nowhere while still being within easy reach of a weekend getaway. To get there you have to drive right into the heart of the Langeberg mountains, in the Koo valley (where the canned fruit comes from), which is itself fairly off the beaten track. About 40kms along, you turn off onto a dirt track which winds its way over the hill and down into a previously hidden valley — and that’s our destination...

Eskom unveils new nuke power plan

Eskom intends to build a conventional nuclear power station at Koeberg - in addition to the pebble bed modular reactor (PBMR) planned for the site, public enterprises minister Alec Erwin has announced in London.
