>> Real Estate News - Is SA property going the same way as US’s?

“The bursting of the property bubble in the US need not be followed by a similar collapse in SA” says Michael Power, equity strategist at Investec Asset Management.

>> Boom without the bust?

House prices are not about to enter a boom-bust scenario, but are rather going to stabilise at their current high levels, Standard Bank economist Elna Moolman said at the release of the bank’s quarterly property report.

That must be comforting to recent buyers of homes, especially since, on the face of it, the numbers suggest that the South African homeowner must be feeling the squeeze...

>> Building costs to level off this year

The rate of increase in building costs was likely to fall more than half this year compared with last year, the Bureau for Economic Research (BER) said yesterday.

Prices of building materials such as bricks and cement have been rising sharply, raising concern that this would put the brakes on growth in the building industry, which is already losing momentum...

The hitherto resilient seller’s market in the Western Cape is showing signs of strain as residential property buyers are more bearish in their outlook and expectations. However, the old adage of position-position remains true and there is still money to be made. Even those who speculate can still reap handsome rewards, although with more modest returns. Amateur speculators who have relied on the rising tide however would be better off looking for alternative investments...

One day it's a bleak winter, the next we wake to a warm breeze and blue skies. We're sure that spring is upon us so we run eagerly into the yard with shovel, rake and seeds, intent upon transforming the landscape into a colorful paradise.

But wait! The end product will only be as good as the foundation it's built on. If you prepare in early spring, you'll be rewarded later in the season...
