So I am going to give it my best shot. In my opinion, the answer has blow-all to do with the increase in property prices. We are missing the point. Biesmiellah restaurant in upper Wale Street is full of Afrikaans tannies on this chilly Thursday morning. They're completely out of place. The whites that hang around the Bo-Kaap are usually young, often European and always magazine-trendy. They know that Biesmiellah makes the best rotis in Cape Town. Unlike the tannies - on some sort of group outing - they wouldn't know how good the koeksusters are... |

The
"Bo Kaap" or "Cape Malay Quarter" belongs to
the culturally and historically most interesting parts of Cape Town. Many
of the inhabitants are decendants of the people from Indonesia (Batavia),
Sri Lanka, India and Malaysia, who were captured in the 17th and 18th
century and enslaved by the Dutch-East Indian Trading Company. Many were
Mulims and others were converted to Islam by the Cape Muslim community.
Gentrification,
long thought to be a positive solution to urban decay, is putting Cape
Town's Malay Quarter under threat, writes Karin Schimke. Garth Stead took
the pictures.
