Edition 44 of 2005, Friday, 11 November 2005

Dear reader,

The Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) or "Africa's giant eye" as referred to was inaugurated yesterday and is powerful enough to discern the detail on a two rand coin at a distance of five kilometers.

"Even those of us who know nothing about astronomy have awaited this day with great anticipation... that this giant eye in the Karoo will tell us as yet unknown and exciting things about ourselves," said President Thabo Mbeki

"The property boom is over but there are still juicy returns to be had by astute buyers in 2006." That was the message from Pam Golding Property (PGP) group chief executive Dr Andrew Golding this week when he reported on what has been another bumper year for the real estate group. Real Estate News, what to expect in 2006

"Following on last week’s fairy tale concerning availability and exclusivity, I’d like to examine the topic further with an emphasis on human behaviour this time. Sellers, particularly in a buyer’s market, which is hard upon us, need to market carefully if they are to be effective in both selling and realising the best price possible" This from Dave Welmans this week - The Property Game, Discounting your house

Salt Rock is situated just north of Shaka's Rock and Ballito - a gem of a holiday resort which creates a relaxed holiday atmosphere, even for the locals. The name, Salt Rock, originates from King Shaka's days when his handmaidens used to collect dried salt off the rocks at low tide. The salt was used for trading with settlers who would pass through regularly. And this is where we will be focussing this week, Salt Rock, Dolphin Coast, Kwazulu Natal, South Africa

Enjoy!

>> Flat ownership has its pros and cons

APARTMENT living, with its secure, lock-up-and-go lifestyle, is becoming an increasingly sought-after home ownership option among first time buyers.

Despite obvious benefits, however, there are some aspects of this type of property ownership that are confusing or even off-putting for the uninformed, says Mike Bester, c.e.o. of national real estate group Realty 1 Elk.

Essentially, there are two main options for flat ownership in South Africa, he says. More popular and prevalent is sectional title ownership, whereby purchasers own the property and the title is registered in their name...

>> Construction fever at Century City

THE built environment at Cape Town’s well-known mixed-use precinct, Century City, is set to double in size within 18 months, with 14 major commercial and residential projects worth R4,3bn either under construction or about to be started.

Because of huge demand for office space in Cape Town, the bulk of the new developments being rolled out are commercial properties, primarily for owner-occupiers. The most recent office property development launched at Century City is the R350m office park The Estuaries, which sold out in 24 hours at its launch two weeks ago.
