"It is such a thin market that moves are exaggerated",
said Briat economist Colen Garrow. The rand was last at these levels in
November 1998. The rand has appreciated by more than 17% against the sagging
dollar this year. The Democratic Alliance hits out hard at Cape Town's draft policy after the mayoral committee has approved a policy, behind closed doors, that would allow a black, disabled women to buy council land even if a white man opt to double the price she paid. Belinda Walker, Democratic Alliance city councilor for Bo-Kaap, Gardens, Oranjezicht, Tamboerskloof and Vredehoek, said she was "horrified at the secrecy in which the decision was made and the illegality of the whole process". Kleinmond has been a favourite summer-holiday destination for
many farmers since 1860. Farmers from Caledon and nearby areas began making
this annual pilgrimage to camp near the Palmiet lagoon and the Klein Botriver
mouth, near to where the Hotel stands today. Church services were held
near the Kleinmond lagoon from as early as 1902. The tree which
stands there has earned the name of 'die Preek Boom' (the sermon tree).
