Edition 34 of 2004, Friday 10 September 2004

Dear Reader,

This week we saw NASA's Genesis space capsule slammed into the Utah desert after its parachutes failed, leaving scientists unsure if its invaluable cargo of microcosmic solar dust survived the journey to Earth.

We also saw according to Absa's monthly house price index that was released on Monday that House prices increased by a record 27.7 percent year-on-year in August 2004 from a revised record 26.8 percent (26.1 percent) year-on-year in July 2004.

We take you on a property journey this week..

  • Why invest in property
  • What to do with your property once you have bought it - the rental option.

From snoek (which can be bought fresh for R20 or less) to crayfish and mussels from the bay. The Weskus (West Coast), Western Cape, South Africa is also a popular spot for tourists to see whales during their mating season, which is from early August to about November. Focus on, this week takes a look at this beautiful region of our country.

A cat can be an extremely lovable pet to have. But taking care of this little bundle of fun and frolic can be a Herculean task. You can get some good pointers this week in Have Fun.

House prices continue to rise

House prices increased by a record 27.7 percent year-on-year in August 2004 from a revised record 26.8 percent (26.1 percent) year-on-year in July 2004, according to Absa's monthly house price index released on Monday.

This means that house prices have more than doubled since June 2000, while consumer inflation has risen by less than 25 percent over the same period. The year-on-year growth in house prices during the first eight months of 2004 has averaged 25.1 percent...

>> Why invest in property?

The property investment outlook has been bolstered over the last couple of years by a number of factors including a volatile/declining equities market and good returns from property investments. This has generated renewed interest from investors in property as an asset class.

Fundamentally property is an increasingly important asset class, which should be considered for many reasons, including qualities such as..

>> What to do with your property - the rental option

IN A move welcomed by the residential property industry, national property manager Trafalgar has launched SA's first residential property rental index, saying that the lack of sound rental information has been a major cause of arguments over a price bubble.

Trafalgar CEO Neville Schaefer says it has been preparing the index with statisticians for a year to make sure it is acceptable to economists and academics...

For sale: Thatcher's mansion

Mark Thatcher's mansion in the leafy Cape Town suburb of Constantia is going up for sale on Monday for R24-million, according to a newspaper report.

The businessman son of former British prime minister Margaret Thatcher, who has been charged with bankrolling a plot to stage a coup in oil-rich Equatorial Guinea, has decided to sell the two-storey, eight-bedroom home he purchased in 1995, the Sunday Times reported.

The "Weskus" (Western Coast), Western Cape, South Africa

One of the many routes that lead north from Cape Town is the road that follows the rugged western shores of South Africa, commonly referred to as "The West Coast". This region, which stretches from Yzerfontein in the south (about 80 km north of Cape Town) to Strandfontein (about 40 km north of Langebaan), comprises mostly of a chain of small fishing villages and holiday resorts.

>> Have fun!!

Taking Care of your Cat

Cats can be one of the most lovable and playful pets to have. They bring a sense of radiance to the house and fill it with joy. Surveys conducted in the past have documented those families with cats in their house score higher on the happiness index. It isn’t surprising that cats are the most preferred pets to keep; by the single occupant. But keeping a cat at home means taking on a big responsibility. The health of the pet in the house is an indicator of the general health of the entire family.
