A R300m residential estate is being developed at Zevenwacht wine farm on Stellenbosch’s wine route next to Kuils River.

Zevenwacht owner Harold Johnson says in-depth agricultural, environmental and related studies over the past three years have resulted in a decision to use land for purposes such as housing.

He says the rezoning has been approved by the City of Cape Town and all other relevant authorities and that this is encouraging for future development and growth in the region...

Dr HJ van der Bijl, a brilliant young scientist working in the United States, was called back to South Africa in 1920 by Prime Minister Jan Smuts to advise the government on planning South Africa'a industrial development. Van der Bijl oversaw the inauguration of the Iron and Steel Corporations's (ISCOR) first plant at Pretoria in 1934 and, with increased demand, 10 000ha was bought to build a large steelworks and model city for its employees - Vanderbijlpark.

The steelworks, the largest works in the Southern Hemisphere, began operating in 1947 and the town, which forms Gauteng's border along the Vaal River, was proclaimed in 1949 and attained municipal status in 1952.

Vanderbijlpark's 500 000 trees shade streets named after scientists, engineers, composers, poets, writers and medical practitioners. They house one of the most cosmopolitan communities in the country.

Beijing - A Chinese company's efforts at selling plots of land on the moon was a "beautiful" idea but fraudulent and illegal, a government watchdog has ruled.

The firm, known as "Lunar Embassy", had managed to sell tracts of the moon for 298 yuan (about R235) an acre before being shut down in late October, the China Daily reported on Wednesday.

Lunar Embassy chief Li Jie took the case to Beijing's commercial watchdog, urging that the suspension of his company's license be lifted...
