Getting assistance of an estate agent

Getting expert advice and assistance is advisable. How do you go about finding a reputable estate agent? You can ask friends or family for recommendations, or you can find out who the estate agents are who are working in your area/suburb by consulting your local newspaper or even by keeping your eyes open for signs.

As a buyer, you need to be very clear as to the price range that you can afford, so that the estate agent can advice you on properties that "fit the pocket".

You need to communicate the following to the estate agent

  • the property criteria that you are looking for
  • whether you are relying on funds from the sale of your existing property to utilize when purchasing the new property
  • the time constraints in finding a property to buy, if there are any

The estate agent may also assist you with some of the legal aspects of buying a home, such as providing you with an "Offer to purchase" contract, and a "Home loan" application form. The estate agent will also provide you as to the legal process that needs to be followed in getting the property registered in your name.
