Efforts to shed light on rates increase by City of Johannesburg continue
According to the proposal, commercial property rates within the City’s jurisdiction are to be increased by 28%. This could have a material impact on the affordability of premises for tenants, and therefore on vacancy levels for property owners, particularly in these strained economic times.

It is as yet unclear whether the increase has actually been put into effect. SAPOA’s legal services department has made multiple attempts to obtain clarity on the situation from the City of Johannesburg, but it has so far received very little assistance. In the interim, the organisation has appealed to its members to contact the legal services department if they receive rates invoices from the City which reflect such an increase.

“In the interests of protecting our members, we will continue with our attempts to obtain definite information from the City of Johannesburg,” says Tsakane Shilubane, legal services manager at SAPOA. “We would also greatly appreciate the assistance of any SAPOA members who can shed any light on the matter,” he adds. SAPOA will continue its attempts to communicate with the City on the matter and will keep members informed.
