North of Durban on the western coast of South Africa is the suburb
of La Lucia, which is becoming one of the most popular places in the
region for both businesses and residents alike. The beachside residences
and spectacular homes lead inland to a series of increasingly busy corporate
parks and business areas. The older homes have been joined with newer
apartments and off-plan developments as La Lucia has continued to grow.
The town is essentially split into two parts, Upper and Lower La Lucia.
Lower La Lucia lies along the coast and Upper La Lucia has a number
of new developments and gated communities. Above the residential area
is La Lucia Ridge, where the business section takes over. La Lucia Ridge
Office Estate is a collection of 14 self-contained office parks that
overlook the suburbs of Durban.
The coastal area is full of large, older houses that are very expensive,
as well as some newer townhomes. Most of the new developments are a
little inland, where the suburb is growing at a solid pace. One high
end project is called The Executive and is located on Umhlanga Rocks
Drive. There are 56 house sites with amazing views of the ocean, as
well as several luxury condominiums.
La Palma Terraces is another recent project with 140 apartments. The
complex has landscaped gardens and pools, and most of the units have
nice sea views. Since going on sale three years ago, prices for these
units have appreciated considerably. This is an indicator that property
in this area is a good investment, and will probably continue to be
so for some time to come.
