Opportunity for top young minds to thrive in the property sector

With a strong focus on education and skills, Growthpoint supports a substantial number of initiatives which support education from pre-primary to tertiary levels, proficiency training, empowerment and the advancement of entrepreneurship. The company is also an active participant in education initiatives undertaken by industry representative bodies such as SAPOA (South African Property Owners Association) and the Women’s Property Network (WPN).

Growthpoint’s bursary programme provides eager and capable students with a grant to enable them to obtain tertiary qualifications in the commercial property field. It also ensures that the sector continues to grow and meet new challenges through the advancement of sector-specific knowledge.

Students were selected on the basis of academic potential, following a national advertising campaign where students were invited to apply.

“The need for this bursary programme is clearly evident in the positive response and applications it has received from a high calibre of students,” says Norbert Sasse, CEO of Growthpoint Properties Limited. “The programme provides practical work experience as bursary recipients will work at Growthpoint and gain valuable hands-on experience and mentorship as an extension of the bursary”.

The opportunity to learn and apply their knowledge in South Africa’s leading commercial property company has these enthusiastic students excited about their futures.

Lebogang Mangwale, who is studying for a BSc Property Studies says: “Receiving the Growthpoint bursary is an honour and a humbling experience. It is also a great opportunity to learn, develop and establish myself in the property industry and to give back to the industry."

Bursary recipient Malcolm Mbatha who is studying towards a Building Science Diploma says that the bursary has enabled him to focus on his academics. “I am excited at the opportunity to work in such a well-established company and I hope to learn as much as possible so that I am an asset to Growthpoint.”

BSc Property Studies student Cheyeza Mkhabele says, “The Growthpoint programme is a great stepping stone and I look forward to learning from my mentors and also being able to one day mentor others."

Fourth year BCom Business Management, bursary recipient, Catherine Kirkwoord, adds” “This bursary both furthers my studies and gives me the privilege of working with a leading company.”

Yongama Mabece who is completing a Diploma in Real Estate, agrees that the bursary is a huge privilege. "Knowing that I will one day work with and learn from some of the best people in the industry who have vast experience in the field motivates me to work harder."

Meeting a real need to develop future knowledge and skills in South Africa’s property industry, Growthpoint intends to continue its bursary programme in 2011. Application details will be announced in the national media in November 2011.

“There are exciting, challenging and rewarding opportunities for our top young minds and talent in the property industry,” says Sasse. “We are confident that this group of bursary students have what it takes to succeed and Growthpoint is proud to be able to give them a well-deserved boost into a career in one of the most dynamic sectors in any economy.”
