Homeowners to pay more?

Deputy Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Yunus Carrim on Monday downplayed fears that proposed changes to the Municipal Property Rates Acts would result in homeowners paying more.

The suggested amendments will be debated in Parliament and subjected to a public participation process.

The proposed changes state any so-called public service infrastructure like dams or roads should not be subject to municipal rates.

Should these changes be enforced, some residents would be taxed more in order to fund the maintenance of these infrastructure.

Carrim said the proposals were not set in stone.

"These changes, we must stress, serve to benefit the poor but not at the expense of applying higher property rates to those who are relatively well off."
