With huge demand for affordable housing should, in theory, make the JSE a popular place for residential landlords to raise capital, but the South African listed sector has traditionally shied away from residential property because of a perception that housing - particularly the lower-income rental sector - is way too risky. In Property investment is a 'good plan' Greg Harris, CEO of Chas Everitt Property Rentals asks why there aren’t more people investing in rental property and boosting the buy-to-let numbers back up? He believes that the major constraint for would-be investors now is the worry about how they would manage a rental property and/ or tenants, especially in a remote location and legislation that makes it more difficult to evict defaulting tenants.

While renting a property offers a tenant the luxury of selecting a home that meets their short term needs, purchasing a home is a far larger commitment that requires careful consideration. In 5 things every first time buyer should consider Adrian Goslett, Regional Director and CEO of RE/MAX of Southern Africa, gives some valuable advice to all new prospective home owners.
