Interest rates remain one of the main factors influencing the performance of residential property prices; those were the words of Jacques du Toit, property analyst at Absa after the recent increase in the repo rate by 50 basis points. For more of this article read a title Repo Rate Rise below.

According to Tony Bales of Epping Industrial Property, the listed property sector on the JSE is now offering yields as high as 10% on certain shares. Yields on fixed property have risen into double-digit territory in Cape Town, which has traditionally had the lowest yields in SA. In one of the more alarming scandals to rock South African banking in recent years, a senior banker at Nedbank’s Imperial Bank, who scored more than R9m in a multimillion-rand corrupt loans-for-favours scheme, has been sentenced to 19 years in jail.
