The real estate market is ending the year on a strong note, with billions of rands’ worth of new home loans having been granted and many thousands of buyers happily settled into their new homes. “Home values also continue to rise and the percentage of loan applications that are turned down outright continues to decline as the banks pursue new mortgage business, so there is definitely room for optimism,” says Shaun Rademeyer, CEO of BetterBond Home Loans, SA’s leading mortgage origination group. As a result of apartheid policies, many of SA’s citizens have become used to living outside of the formal land and property registration system and it does not occur to them to challenge the status quo. But this fact, together with the legacy of a skewed distribution of land ownership which until 1991 limited black South Africans (75% of the population) to only 13% of the land, has direct implications for the country’s cadastral records. Just how bad are things at Eskom? This is probably a question in every South African's mind. Last Monday, Eskom spokesperson Andrew Etzinger was “cautiously optimistic” that there would be no load shedding during the week “or in the near future”.
