As we near the half year mark, the South African residential property market is still performing well with the metropolitan areas outperforming the other areas. According to SAPTG Data, the Western Cape is home to the areas where the most transfers are taking place, while in Rand Value Gauteng's areas take top honours.

The number of potential buyers for upmarket properties is increasing faster in Africa than in Europe and the UK. According to Berry Everitt, MD of the Chas Everitt International property group, African economies are growing much faster and creating more millionaires and billionaires than those in European countries, although most foreigners buying property are still from the traditional overseas markets. If you own and live in a residential home, there are no tax benefits. Tax benefits on home ownership expenses apply specifically to second homes bought for investment and the buy-to-let market according to Craig Hutchison, CEO of Engel & Völkers Southern Africa. He advises that before you invest in a property with the idea of benefiting from any costs, consult a tax consultant, your auditor, wealth managers/companies, or visit your local SARS office to get their expertise first hand.
