Property News - 05 December 2014

FROM THE EDITOR

According to Robin Lockhart-Ross, who was recently appointed Managing Executive at Nedbank Corporate Property Finance, one of the significant developments in the corporate property finance market during 2014 involved the rise in the number of commercial property players increasing their exposure to the residential rental market. For more of this story, read an article titled Residential appetite clearly growing.

The First National Bank’s property barometer that was released on Monday, the 1st of December 2015 indicated that the global oil and food markets have been key to South Africa’s residential property market performance. John Loos, FNB household and property sector strategist, said in a statement that, for those linked to the residential market in some way, therefore, the reports of a current oil ‘glut’ should perhaps be a cause for happiness. Read an article titled Oil and food markets essential to SA property market for more.

Is SA on the edge of a fiscal abyss or just a bog? One is increasingly hearing the comment that South Africa is teetering on the edge of a fiscal abyss. The question is whether or not this is a realistic perception of the state of the government’s financial position. This rather dramatic picture needs first to be defined. A fiscal abyss means a country’s debt burden has become unbearable and that it is on the verge of defaulting; in other words it will not be able to pay either the interest on the debt or the capital in respect of bonds that have reached maturity (or both). Scroll down to read the full article.

We then take a closer look at Nelspruit; a provincial capital of Mpumalanga and a gateway to the Kruger National Park located on the North Eastern corner of South Africa. To learn more about this interesting town, scroll down to the Focus On section of this Newsletter.
